June update

Nearly 7 months have passed since arriving in St Katharine Docks and its amazing how quickly time flies! The cold nights are well and truly over and the marina is a hive of activity!

Boat Jobs

I’ve been preoccupying myself with a variety of boat jobs over the winter and into what is now the start of summer I guess.

Excalibur has had:

  • An engine service
  • Various bits of wood varnished using International Woodskin
  • New Jabsco Twist  ‘n Lock toilet pump
  • Replaced the Henderson / Whale Mark 5 Bilge Pump
  • Insulated and carpeted the forepeak, and hanging locker using closed cell foam and carpet  with self adhesive backing from Hawkes House
  • Added catches and hinges to lockers under the cabin berths
  • Installed lee cloths
  • A new hatch cover

Excalibur has been out 3 times this year I’m ashamed to say. One trip to Erith YC, Queenborough and Ramsgate. The only mishaps on any of these trips were running out of cooking gas in Queenborough, and running out of Water on the way back from Ramsgate. Needless to say I will be getting a water tank guage soon, and swapping from camping gaz to butane, which will involve increasing the gas locker storage to accept two bottles and the extra height needed to take a 4.5kg butane bottle.

Ramsgate was a particularly good 3 day trip. We departed St Kats at 6am and motored to Ramsgate arriving at 8pm as predicted. One of the marker buoys had moved the week before when a ferry being towed caught the buoy and moved it along the channel, which was a surprise. Myself and Ben are starting to work really well as a team, we worked in 1 hour shifts throughout the trip, and did a night passage the next day to Queenborough, again no wind but at least it mean’t we could iron out a few things like getting our light sequences nailed.

On the Monday morning we had a fantastic sail, all the way from Queenborough to the Thames barrier, with the toe rail under the water, and sometimes the windows, we had an exhilarating ride, helped by some Classic FM playing ‘valkyrie’ and other classics making the whole journey that bit more dramatic.
